This Week in ELA

Hello parents and students! We are ending the 2017-2018 school year. Please take a moment to read the following for important information.

In the upcoming weeks, we will be focusing on only 5 more SHORT units. We will be looking at three more lessons in VocabuLit, studying the drama "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street," studying the myth "Icarus and Daedalus," completing a compare and contrast unit on the fairy tale "Snow White," and LASTLY, we will read the science fiction short story, "All Summer In A Day," by Ray Bradbury.

A few things to keep in mind as we finish out this year: AR points will end on Wednesday, May 16. This grade will be put in 5/17/18. The classes have been struggling to actually read and take AR tests on books. I've talked to them, what feels like, a hundred times about how they need to take this seriously, but not much has happened as a result. I want every parent to be aware that AR is a TEST grade and could negatively impact your student's grade if they do not complete it.

Exemptions will be announced on Friday, May 18, 2018 at the END of class. If your child is not in attendance that day, don't assume that he or she is exempt because we will be taking our last unit test that day, which may determine whether or not a student will be exempt from exams the following week. THIS IS NOT A GOOD TIME TO MISS SCHOOL. The last thing I want is for a student/parent to get confused on whether their child is exempt from a test if they really are not. This will result in a zero for the nine weeks test.

Finally, the last day to turn in any make-up work will be Wednesday, May 16th. Ms. Kahl will NOT accept work after this day. There needs to be time to grade it and put it in the gradebook. Those couple days allow her to be able to do that effectively.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email Ms. Kahl at lindsay.kahl@dcsms.org.

We are almost done!!! Hang in there!
